YNA Young Negotiators

The Land Youth Negotiator Programme (LYNP), launched in November 2023, develops the next generation of land negotiators. It is being delivered for the first time in 2024 at the 16th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

YNA Operations

YNA has, at the 16th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in Cali, Colombia, committed to developing the Biodiversity Youth Negotiator Programme (BYNP). This expands our activity to cover all three of the Rio Conventions.

As I reflect on my experience with the Land Youth Negotiators Program (LYNP) at COP 16, I am filled with a sense of pride, gratitude, and purpose. Being part of the LYNP team was a transformative experience that equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to navigate the complex world of negotiations.

Through LYNP's comprehensive training program, I learned how to effectively advocate for Land action, navigate the pressures of negotiations, and identify loopholes in the system. But what struck me most was the sense of community and solidarity that we built as young negotiators. For the first time, we had a voice, and we were determined to use it to make a difference.

The experience was not without its challenges, but with the guidance of our mentors, we learned how to manage our emotions, build our presence in the audience, and collaborate with other youths from diverse backgrounds. We formed bonds that went beyond our roles as negotiators, and we became each other's backbone, supporting and encouraging each other every step of the way.

One of the most significant takeaways from my experience with LYNP was the realization that, as youths, we are not alone in this fight. We are part of a global community that is committed to creating a more sustainable future. And with that knowledge comes a sense of responsibility, a sense of purpose, and a sense of determination to make a difference.

As I look back on my journey with LYNP, I am filled with gratitude for the friendships, connections, and knowledge that I gained. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community that is shaping the future of our planet. And I am grateful for the experience that has equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to continue advocating for environmental action.

"Thanks to the Youth Negotiators Academy Program and to the support of CARE Denmark, I spent five intense months in the fundamentals Cohort learning about UNFCCC negotiation processes and the role of youth in negotiations, as well as interacting with other youths from around the world, discussing COP 30 negotiations. The final in-person training was the last piece I needed; it left me empowered, informed, and ready to step confidently into the negotiation rooms of COP30. We were guided on how to navigate the UNFCCC portal to access COP agendas, reports, and negotiation texts, and we even carried out realistic negotiation simulations that brought the entire process to life."

The Youth Negotiators Academy is fiscally hosted by interalia. interalia is a female-led not-for-profit organisation based in Germany aimed at breaking down barriers for civil society and empowering members of civil society working at the intersection of tech and social justice, by taking care of their operations and finances as they evolve.
