Collaborations

The climate crisis demands urgent, transformative action, yet the voices of youth and women, especially from marginalized communities, are too often left out of leadership discussions. In response, CARE Denmark and the Youth Negotiators Academy (YNA) joined forces through the Climate Youth Negotiator Programme (CYNP) to co-finance the participation of five youth and women leaders at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Together, we're working to ensure that the future of climate policy is shaped by those most affected by its impacts. As I reflect on my experience with the Land Youth Negotiators Program (LYNP) at COP 16, I am filled with a sense of pride, gratitude, and purpose. Being part of the LYNP team was a transformative experience that equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to navigate the complex world of negotiations.

Through LYNP's comprehensive training program, I learned how to effectively advocate for Land action, navigate the pressures of negotiations, and identify loopholes in the system. But what struck me most was the sense of community and solidarity that we built as young negotiators. For the first time, we had a voice, and we were determined to use it to make a difference.

The experience was not without its challenges, but with the guidance of our mentors, we learned how to manage our emotions, build our presence in the audience, and collaborate with other youths from diverse backgrounds. We formed bonds that went beyond our roles as negotiators, and we became each other's backbone, supporting and encouraging each other every step of the way.

One of the most significant takeaways from my experience with LYNP was the realization that, as youths, we are not alone in this fight. We are part of a global community that is committed to creating a more sustainable future. And with that knowledge comes a sense of responsibility, a sense of purpose, and a sense of determination to make a difference.

As I look back on my journey with LYNP, I am filled with gratitude for the friendships, connections, and knowledge that I gained. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a community that is shaping the future of our planet. And I am grateful for the experience that has equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to continue advocating for environmental action.

"Thanks to the Youth Negotiators Academy Program and to the support of CARE Denmark, I spent five intense months in the fundamentals Cohort learning about UNFCCC negotiation processes and the role of youth in negotiations, as well as interacting with other youths from around the world, discussing COP 30 negotiations. The final in-person training was the last piece I needed; it left me empowered, informed, and ready to step confidently into the negotiation rooms of COP30. We were guided on how to navigate the UNFCCC portal to access COP agendas, reports, and negotiation texts, and we even carried out realistic negotiation simulations that brought the entire process to life."

"I wanted to become more present, so I started actively applying the dialogue principles and practices taught at YNA beyond UNCCD COP16 in my daily life.

One example of this was during the opening session, where I practiced active listening while countries delivered their statements. By paying attention not only to what was said but also to the underlying intentions, I was able to anticipate the dynamics of the drought negotiations and this later proved to be accurate.

After returning home, I realized that I often used to 'download' information instead of truly listening. Since then, I’ve made a conscious effort to listen with more curiosity and openness, both at work and in my personal interactions. I now try to understand why people think or behave in certain ways rather than judging them.

This shift has significantly improved how I relate to others. Instead of labeling people, I focus on understanding and supporting them. As a result, others sometimes call me 'the psychologist,' reflecting how much more attentive and empathetic I’ve become in my interactions."

"Sometimes I wonder what my ability to work with colleagues and engage in discussions would be like if I hadn’t taken part in the LYNP Fundamental Programme, full of valuable learning experiences.

Before the training, I had the habit of looking away while speaking with someone instead of maintaining eye contact. Through the third dialogue principle, I understood that this could be perceived as not fully following the person who is talking, even though I was actually listening. Since then, I’ve changed my approach, moving from my old habit to a more attentive way of listening. And it has made a real difference.

Speaking of personal practice, I experienced something during the COP16, during the in-person training. It made me feel truly misrepresented. Indeed, during the negotiation simulation in my group, I felt that I wasn’t being listened to. My point of view was not fully considered, partly because of the English barrier I had at that time. It was shocking for me, but I couldn’t hold it to myself. I then applied the last personal practice (Personal Development) by speaking with Luea about the situation and how uncomfortable it made me feel. This experience reminded me of something very important : having someone you can talk to when you feel hurt truly matters. That is why Personal Development is so important. So, that is my story with the above courses and i'am still observing and practicing them in my personal work."
